Oh yes! This is my favorite time of the year. We get to start our 5-month journey together through the NBA Season. Over the past 5 years the Basketball Collectors market has absolutely exploded and this year the trend has accelerating even more. There is lots of hype, overreaction, discouragement, upside, and value… oh the beauty of a fast-moving hobby. This article is meant to give you some tips and insight into which players we have (and will continue) to invest in.

INVESTMENT STRATEGIES?

There are obviously lots of strategies when it comes to sports card investing. From veterans, to sealed wax, to RC’s, etc… you can focus on one particular area and find various folks who do well within their realm. With our approach to the Top 50 NBA Investment Players, we combined a few approaches are will note the strategy we like the best for the player. Here are the strategies.

Buy and Grade: This is the type of player that is primed to takeoff and graded cards will be the currency that gives you the most upside.

Hoard Base: This is type of player that I would be looking to accumulate base RC’s (Prizm & Optic are my go to…) and building an investment in their upside.

Buy Graded: This player is one that likely has a good amount of graded cards on the market. You are buying an asset that is liquid & transparent with market.

These are the three core strategies I take with any sport. The type of player, their current team, time of the year, etc… all play into the strategy that makes sense.

SCORING APPROACH?

When we decided to put together a larger list of rankings, we started with the 50 players we’d consider RIGHT NOW. This took a lot of work, but it helped us identify the bucket we could pull from. We then broke down our list into a few categories:

Veterans with Upside: Guy with 5 years of experience that we believe should be staples in your strategy.

Upperclass with Upside: Guys with 3-5 years of experience, poised for breakout.

Sophomore Explosion: 2nd Year players who have momentum coming in… or will get their chance this year.

Rookie No-Brainer: The RC’s that at EXPECTED prices will be no-brainer investments.

High-Risk — High Reward Prospect: The guys that don’t necessarily have a path… but when given the shot could be great opportunities.
