So this past week we had the annual National Sports Card Conference….and the release of 2018 Topps Chrome Baseball. One of them stole most of the attention… and it wasn’t Chrome. Let’s dig into what’s happening with 2018 Topps Chrome pricing.
The purpose of the pricing ladder is to give you a rundown into all of the RC BASE Auto prices for a given product. With 2018 Topps Chrome we have 72 base autos. This is insane in itself… but what’s really insane is the absolutely butt-kicking folks are taking with resale value. From strictly an aesthetic point of view, the cards are awesome. Really… they are beautiful cards. Does that matter when 55 out of the 72 auto’s don’t even sell for $10… after the first week!!

Yes, you are seeing that correctly. Of the 72 auto’s in 2018 Topps Chrome, only 10 of them have an average selling price over $20….and even worse…. only 17 of 72 average over $10. If all the odds were even with top players vs the rest… you’d still only have a 77% chance that the auto you pull is worth less than $10…and likely closer to $5. Folks… that’s pretty bad.
But don’t leave… because there is some silver lining. That is this… the top 5 rookies are selling really well and do make the chase more exciting that most years.

Criteria
We run reports on all 2018 Topps Chrome BASE AUTO sales for a given period. We exclude any variation, auto, insert, graded, or memorabilia prices to make sure you are getting a good representation of the actual base auto pricing. We use Base Auto prices as a baseline because they are considered by many to be the de facto standard for “base” prospect cards for MLB players. We also do our best to remove the countless MISLABELED listings for players, but there is always a chance a random auction can slightly skew the #’s. We’ll keep a close eye.
